Professor Lu is the group head of Theoretical Physics at the University of Science and Technology of China
and is also the funding Director of the Interdisciplinary Center for Theoretical Study, University of Science
and Technology of China.
Professor Lu obtained his PhD in theoretical physics from Texas A&M University in 1992. During 1992-1999,
he held postdoctoral research positions, visiting assistant professor position in European Center for Particle
Physics (CERN) at Geneva, Texas A&M University, respectively. From 1999-2002, he was a senior research
fellow in Michigan Center for Theoretical Physics. He has been a Professor of Physics at the University of
Science and Technology of China (USTC) and the funding director of USTC Interdisciplinary Center for
Theoretical Study since May of 2002. He became the Changjiang Chair Professor of Physics in 2004. He
was also awarded the “One-hundred people project” by the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2002 and the
“Distinguished Young Scholar fund ” by the National Science Foundation of China in 2005.
Professor Lu’s research interest lies in string/M theory and the related topics. He made a significant
contribution to the non-perturbative string/M theory during the so-called second string theory revolution.
He was one of few people to first discover the non-purturbative brane objects in string theory and revealed
the connection between string and branes which had been thought otherwise. He has published more than
50 research papers with more than 2500 total citations in this field. Among these, one is now with more than
600 citations and the other four each has more than 100 citations. In the ISI 2002 edition of brane theory, he
was ranked No. 7 on cites per paper world-widely among the top 25 most cited authors.
